It’s been 3 years since I did a Valentine’s mix but I felt compelled to do something this year because the ideas were coming. When the ideas come, I stop everything I do and get cracking and man, I’m so happy I did. I love this mix and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have been. It’s kinda cool to enjoy your own mixtape days before maybe thousands of people would. I got to warn the fans though – if you need that hardcore hip-hop in your life, go get my other mixtapes. This is for people who aren’t shy about how much they love Miguel, Janet and even H-Town. In case that’s not your thing, I’d still suggest you take a listen because it’s still really creative, musical DJing with a lot of thought and tricks.
The first Valentine’s mix I did was at a time when I didn’t really have a career in DJing, I wasn’t using swish effects, m-rock name drops, and hype intros. It was just straight to the music. I knew a dude who just got engaged and he paid me $40 to make a tape for his girl for Valentine’s Day. I was out of work and totally excited to do the tape, which I eventually put out for the fans. At the time, I loved lots of darker stuff, but it was imperative the tape was lyrically about love and positive. A couple can’t groove to ‘i should have cheated’! But yeah, I nod the past a lot with music about love, it’s not in style right now. What’s in style is sad, angry dudes blaming their ex’s and hoping we sympathize or care. This tape is pretty much the vibe of the 2009 tape except it’s on crack, better yet, it’s on blue sky straight from Walter White. Thanks to DJ iKhan who taught me how to mix this kind of stuff the right way (I check him on Thursdays at F-Stop). And RIP Whitney Houston (saved her for last). Enjoy and Happy Valentine’s Day.
