“his get lucky daft punk edit where he added the strings and the horns is fucking amazing, if you’re a dj you should be playing that version….you’re in for a treat for that one, super-skilled dj-remixer-producer from toronto and we have the pleasure of a guest mix from him on the show” – Mark Ronson

It’s a blessing to hear such great things from an artist I respect so much. Plus, dude is listening to those details, the details I hope stand out. I’ll let the music do the talking here on. Closing my mouth and playing music is my favourite combination recently.

Who am I kidding? I have to say a few things about these tracks, that I would never get a chance to play at most clubs, or on the usual urban-type radio show I’m invited to.

‘Street Player’: This first song is about how funky Chicago is, even tho their fans hated it back in 79. Shout out to @kdope50 for the bomb

@KeyshiaCole Rmx: The bass & drums r a bit loopy, but this is how I interpret disco in 2013. Hope u guys feel it still sounds authentic.

I’m playing Hot Shot by Karen Young, The funkiest & roughest disco can get. These musicians contrast and sweetness & funk so well.

This is my Get Lucky edit. I’ve been thinking about @funkindotcome & rare groove for 15 years, that’s whassup. Listen live on @evradio

I dropped this @robinthicke #blurredlines edit yesterday, I wanted more strings but i’m happy with it. Listen live http://bit.ly/pbPatp

We al know this dj’s got to give it up..ah, RIP Marvin Gaye. This acapella thing is a real Toronto thing right here.

I got a love sensation with Loleatta Holloway, this is PG, the roots of house and 80s dance music.

U better think! I estimate about 40 songs have sampled Lyn Collins. Peep the mini-juggle, he he.

‘The System’ is the unofficial roots of @pharrell in my opinion. The keyboardist went on to produce ‘Genie in a bottle’ 20 yrs later.

This Mariah/Miguel @beautiful edit is unfinished. Def not for the club, but I like something about it. Gimme a bit more studio time, k?

BTW, one of my favourite rappers ever, Kanye West, (stop bugging me about this statement) has just put out new music. In fact, it played last night at the Rom outside of the building while I was inside DJing. Lyrically, I’ve always loved this guy. It’s like he’s standing around me all day and then making raps out of the B.S. I like to talk about. Not sure if that says anything good about who I am, but it is what it is.

“All DJ’s should probably be playing @MRockGotBeats version of “Get Lucky” – Mark Ronson.

I’m very happy that my Daft Punk edit has gotten this much love in such a little bit of time. Two words: Mark Ronson. Some people don’t know who he is, I’ll save you the trouble: He discovered and produced Amy Winehouse, and produced Bruno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven”. His whole vibe is vintage. Dude has not only blown up my remix on twitter but last Friday, he was playing a Biggie remix of mine on EVRadio, and shouting out what I do for a minute on the air. You can hear that all here. But it’s not just about exposure, it’s credit for the old school sound I have coming from a master of that. It’s also a bit motivating, because I feel some projects I do go a bit unnoticed, and to hear a Grammy winner like this guy appreciate those little unknown projects, I feel like doing more of them, simply put.

New Music

I flipped the Janelle Monae ft Erykah Badu track “Q.U.E.E.N.” on another old school adventure.

What’s up people, I apologize for doing fewer mixtapes but my energy is going into producing music so I can drop hot tracks in my sets. The thing with the Daft Punk ft Pharrell song is even though I love the risk they’ve taken, and how that vintage disco sound is so familiar, it doesn’t totally knock the room down. And it sounds a bit like it could use some more to really give it that old school feel. I wanted to hear a funky brass band and a section of violinists bending their necks towards their instruments on top. I was picturing a band like this:

So that’s what I did, I just worked hard at producing it so it sounds old school. People are constantly telling me I made an amazing song actually sound better. They can’t even believe it’s the same song because it feels different. I usually wouldn’t do a blog post for one song, but this is feeling right to me, so I wanted to pass it along.

Some more music.

This is production – my new beats and scratched in hooks, intros & outros under verses from Biggie. If you’re someone who enjoys my mixtape intros full of beats and cuts, you’ll love this project. I want fans to take notice that my passion is sound and music, in more ways than just as a DJ. I got lucky flipping some old samples from the 70s, and got lucky producing entire songs from scratch using my laptop, keys and guitar. It’s hard to lay guitar on a track without sounding jazzy or like rock, I got lucky. All of these beats were not made for this project, most of them were made this month, simply because I like making music. Thanks for all the support over the years with my mixtapes. I’m trying something new that I want to do more of. I hope you guys dig this, and if I can somehow make a live show where I’m producing all this in front of a crowd, I hope it’s fresh enough that you feel like coming out to check a dude.

It’s a short mix though – it’s because I made every song on the tape! I hope I can make longer ones for you guys, if you don’t mind me taking more of this route. The thing is, I love doing “best of” tapes, but I’m really just here to be creative. DJs play records and I’ve never been that, I’ve always wanted to flip things around, and a project like this gives me full reign to do that.

Tracklisting:

Sky’s The Limit: This is me all on my College Dropout flex. I love that soul sound Kanye invented.

Kick In The Door: Trying to pay homage to the original by keeping it real empty and head noddy. Had a lot of fun with the cuts…It’s production after all, not beatmaking.

Come On ft. Sadat X: A lot of hardcore hip-hop fans haven’t even heard this song, yet we all refer to the last verse on it as Biggie and Tupac’s “Garden Freestyle”. This track was so much fun to make, and made me feel so cool to cut like Preemo on the end. I’ve always wanted to cut simple and funky like that.

Dead Wrong: I played 95% of this, and it was a lot of fun to make. I love that rock vibe of certain hip-hop, and how it’s sometimes more musical than the choppy sample stuff. “Gun by my side just in case I have to run!” (Listen to it, you’ll know what I mean).

Crush On You: Another beat that’s 1% sampled, that is, I played everything else in it…This was done in 2006, and was sitting on the shelf. It clicked one day when I was trying out some ideas. It’s dope when you feel excited about your own stuff for a change. Some artists feel that way all the time, and have no idea their shit sucks! I’m the opposite – not a great thing, but eh, it is what it is.

One More Chance (Stay With Me): Totally inconsistent with the tape because it’s all Drake’d out but it’s cool, breezy and it’s nice.

Here’s where you can download it. These mixes are sometimes tributing an artist, playing songs you know, and then me taking a risk by playing you stuff that is a bit different. We all know what alternative R&B is – it’s Frank Ocean, the Weeknd, etc. It’s sometimes called “hipster R&B” because it has those elements of electronic, rock that R&B fans were never used to. This tape is about artists like that, and it’s glued together by regular R&B, underground hip-hop and neo-soul. I may start the tape off R&B-ish but trust me, it gets more experimental as it goes. Especially the ones by Kendra Morris, who’s on grittier beats than Amy Winehouse, or Thundercat, who’s a jazz bassist that kind of sings like the Beach Boys without making himself sound out of date. I included Aaliyah’s “One in a million” on there because to me, it’s the first PBR&B or Alternative type of R&B record I’ve ever heard. It made me stop dancing to listen, and had a DNB-ish vibe to it that I had never heard in a pop r&b record. I had the artwork on the cover copy the Pabst Blue-Ribbon logo, a hipster drink where the name PBR&B comes from. Enjoy the mix.

Check out how I flipped Aaliyah’s “One In A Million” into something new-sounding, but still dark and eerie.

This literally went from my laptop w/o equipment to a video that’s gotten around 350,000 hits. Last week people misunderstood that I jumped on the bandwagon, but I really just had an idea to play in the clubs with Outkast versus Bauuer. Nothing viral, just something to spin.
Mix of The Week

Download it here. This week’s mix was a lot of fun for me to put together. DJing 10 years ago just meant spinning the songs we’re humming to ourselves. It’s not as easy today. I’m not always able to find enough hip-hop that doesn’t sound the same, and not being able to find music I like in general. That’s why I personally produced a bit of the tape, and am starting to play other types of music you would party to…Stuff I used to swear I’d never play, that I finally started genuinely moving to. The cover’s Drake in a drop-top over here, a fun way to look at how cold it is in March. Enjoy the 45 minute mix.

Unless you’ve been lying under a rock, you’ve seen a few of these Harlem Shake videos on Youtube. Being viral is cheesy sometimes. I mean, doing a Beastie tape after MCA passes isn’t cheesy because it’s in my soul to mix Beastie records together. So considering I just did an Outkast mix, I thought the “Shake it” lines from “Hey Ya” might sound decent over the Harlem Shake. So I put it together, and got it smacked it over the “Hey Ya” video. It’s a video, but I’m really just trying to get musical thoughts out there. And in case you didn’t know, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” is #1 on the Billboard charts, so in case you’ve heard it too much, this is something a little different. Shout out to Special Designs.

I’m the skinny/fat guy in the back DJing behind all those female’s hands in the air. I usually keep the tone more positive, but like I said, music’s darker and mellow right now, so I go all over the map from Ryan Leslie’s “Never Gonna Break Up” to the bright classic “Darlin’ Darlin Baby” that Big Pun used. There you go. Thanks to the 2000+ people that checked the Outkast mix last week, I hope you guys feel this. Happy Valentine’s Day.

The first thing I think of when I hear someone mention Outkast is nothing – they’re not hip-hop or soul, or anything. They started off as an average hip-hop group, and found real success from making music that is almost impossible to categorize. We don’t know what genre it is, but everyone went crazy the first time they heard “B.O.B.” or “Hey Ya”. Their production is top notch, they put the South on the map and their non-rap song “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard in my life. Play it for anybody, and they start vibing to it instantly. A lot of people don’t know that Andre 3000 is actually an amazing producer (listen to ‘Millionaire’). Their production team, The Dungeon family, is top notch also – crispy drums, psychadelic loops, and all the skills you need to make music from scratch. I’ll be back next week with another mix, but in the meantime enjoy this one.

I met DJ iKhan through a mutual friend years ago, when I hadn’t started my mixing career yet, and he was already a decade deep. Years later, we play the same clubs, play with a similar taste regardless of genre and we’ve always said we should do a tape. Here you go, 60 minutes of trap, starting with the new Just Blaze and Baauer, who actually got a drop from Jay-Z over the phone during the production process. That’s one of the biggest and most mainstream recognitions I’ve seen of EDM and Trap music to date. Trap mixes are usually by DJs who push buttons and dance on stage a lot. I do like to dance but I definitely do not push buttons. This tape was made with actual juggles, scratches, and even some of my own beats. Press play and break them speakers.

We called the tape “Wild For The Night” because we got a cool sample from the track by A$AP Rocky and Skrillex, but it’s the story behind that song. We play clubs but we’re old school dudes, and Skrillex (despite what you expect) actually is the same – he sampled Toronto’s own “Saukrates” white label 12″ record “Father Time” from the 90s. I just think good music stays in a person’s head, whether it’s super rare, and even if it’s 20 years later. This tape couldn’t come about unless we put a spin of who we really are with every scratch and mix. With that said, enjoy the mix.
